MSSTS MSSTS: McMurdo Sound Sediment and Tectonic Study. MSSTS-1 well was drilled in November 1997 12 km northeast of Butter Point in 195 meters of water and cored to 227 meters sub-bottom to obtain information about Cenozoic history of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and its relationship with the development of the Transantarctic Mountains. The well was designed to penetrate the oldest glaciogenic and possibly pre-glacial sediments close to the present day ice sheet and the Transantarctic Mountains. Twenty scientists from New Zealand, the US, and Japan participated. Reference: Antarctic Cenozoic History from the MSSTS-1 drill hole, McMurdo Sound.
